A Roof for a Hero: How T-10 Construction Helped a Disabled Veteran in Need
On June 1, a simple visit to check out a leaking roof became one of the most meaningful projects our team has ever been part of.
Charlie Hughes, a disabled veteran living in New Ulm, Minnesota, welcomed Travis into his home that day. Travis had heard of Charlie for years. Charlie was the father of one of his childhood best friends, but the two had never met in person. When Travis stepped through the door, what he saw left a lasting impression.
“Charlie brought me inside and showed me the spots where water was coming in,” Travis recalled. “The ceiling was stained, the decking felt soft, and the shingles outside were falling apart. There were a couple of patches that were failing. It was one of the worst roofs I had ever been on.”

More Than a Roof Problem
As they talked, Charlie shared the situation. His insurance company had denied his claim for a roof replacement. Without coverage and without the financial means to pay for it himself, he was living under a roof that was breaking down above his head.
“He was not complaining,” Travis said. “He explained everything with humility. Knowing he was a disabled veteran made it hit even harder. Here was someone who had already given so much for everyone else, and now he was living under a roof that was unsafe.”

One Phone Call That Changed the Story
When Travis left the house, he picked up the phone and called Jay to explain Charlie’s situation.
“I told him about the roof, the water damage, and about Charlie,” Travis said. “Jay did not even pause. He said, ‘Absolutely. Let’s do it.’”
That simple yes set everything in motion.
When Travis called Charlie to tell him the news, the response said it all.
“He was overwhelmed. He kept saying, ‘I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it.’ He was almost in tears,” Travis shared. “That kind of gratitude stays with you forever.”

Rebuilding What Was Lost
The crew quickly realized this was not going to be a simple roof replacement. Years of water intrusion had left the decking soft and compromised. The patches that had been added over time had failed, and every step revealed just how urgent the replacement was.
“We knew we were doing more than putting on new shingles,” Travis said. “This was about giving him back security in his own home.”
When the last shingle was nailed in place, the sense of relief was immediate. The leaks were gone. The structure was sound. Charlie’s home was finally safe again.

A Reminder of What Community Means
Charlie’s story is not just about one roof in New Ulm, Minnesota. It is a reminder of a larger truth. Many veterans come home to quiet struggles that most people never see. Some live with physical disabilities. Some carry emotional scars. Others face financial barriers that make even essential repairs impossible.
“This job really drove home how much of a responsibility we all have as a community,” Travis said. “Sometimes stepping up is not about programs or big initiatives. It is about seeing a need right in front of you and saying yes.”
Why Stories Like This Matter to T-10 Construction
At the heart of this roof replacement was not a company policy or a program. It was a personal connection and a moment to do what was right.
T-10 Construction has long believed in supporting veterans, which is why we also sponsor veteran-focused initiatives such as the Wounded Warrior Project. While Charlie’s roof replacement was not part of any formal program, it came from the same place: a commitment to taking care of those who have taken care of us.

Building More Than Roofs in New Ulm
Replacing Charlie’s roof was a powerful reminder that the work we do is about people first. A secure roof can change more than a house. It can change a life.
At T-10 Construction, we are proud to serve New Ulm and the surrounding communities, and we will always strive to bring that same care to every project, whether it is a neighbor in need or a standard roofing job.
